Spectra Logic: We Know Big Storage!

By Betsy Doughty

Organizations around the world are managing exponential data growth like we’ve never seen before. It is being created, analyzed, stored, and shared – sometimes multiple times over. Spectra provides a full range of solutions for these massive data sets and works with our global clients to solve their most difficult data storage challenges.

We are excited to highlight some of our largest deployments on this new web page dedicated to showcasing large data users and how they solved their most pressing data storage problems with Spectra solutions. Want to hear some of the coolest facts about these organizations? Read on:

    • Lawrence Livermore National Labs (LLNL) has a big mission – to make the world a safer place. They deliver solutions that impact our health, safety, and knowledge – including biosecurity, counterterrorism, and energy grid modernization. LLNL has the largest tape library in the world that they trust to store this research. They produce 30 terabytes of data a day, which is equivalent to 58 years’ worth of digital music.
    • Los Alamos National Laboratory is tasked with guaranteeing paramount information retention as part of its nuclear stockpile stewardship mission. New nuclear weapons have not been developed in the United States since the early 1990s, and research at Los Alamos must be conducted without the use of nuclear testing, meaning the data they store may never be re-created. Their Spectra libraries are designed to expand over time to ensure this data is secure.
    • NASA Ames was invaluable in the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover landing in many ways: testing a parachute to slow the rover’s descent, shielding the spacecraft in that descent, helping the first Mars helicopter fly, and measuring the extreme environment. That priceless data is stored on a Spectra Logic TFinity Tape Library.
    • The Max Planck Institute conducts a wide range of research that they store on a Spectra T950.One of their teams is documenting languages and dialects to preserve around 7000 languages currently spoken in the world. It is expected that a third, at most, will still exist by the end of the 21st This research will ensure these languages, and their cultural and intellectual identity, are preserved for posterity.
    • Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) did groundbreaking work in the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic, modeling the spike protein that binds the novel coronavirus to a human cell. This is just one of many research projects from ORNL that has changed the world… all stored on their Spectra TFinity with beautiful panels.

The Spectra Logic tape library (foreground) at ORNL safely houses user data from applications
run on Titan, Summit, and other computing resources.

  • Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) is one of six sites in the UK managed by the Science and Technology Facilities Council. RAL is home to the Central Laser Facility which can recreate the condition inside stars and the Diamond Light Source synchrotron radiation facility that is answering questions about the building blocks of life to the origin of our planet. They proudly shared their TFinity Tape Library being built at their Oxfordshire facility.

We are proud to support the incredible work these organizations are doing for humankind. Our goal is to be the kind of partner that our customers love working with and to live our mantra of ‘Customers First’ every day. Check back regularly as we share more stories like these on our website.
