Trends in Video Surveillance: Managing Retention Rates and Cybercrime

Marketing Program Manager, Spectra Logic

Video surveillance data storage trends

Over the last few years, the video surveillance industry has seen a boom in the amount of video content being generated. As lengthening retention rates, increasing camera intelligence, greater adoption of analytics, and more content aggregation escalate video storage needs and burden existing systems, many organizations are realizing that the amount of managed digital assets will continue to grow. This means that storage strategies for video content can quickly take up a major part of their budgets.

Spectra Logic anticipates a number of key trends to characterize the video surveillance data storage market in 2018 and beyond. Read More

Supercomputing News from ISC HPC 2018

Supercomputing News from ISC HPC Frankfurt ImageISC High Performance (ISC) 2018 took place earlier this week in beautiful Frankfurt, Germany. One of my favorites, the event brought together an impressive 3,500 attendees, 450 speakers and 150 exhibits. Addressing supercomputing, networking and storage, the conference showcased expert speakers, tutorials, workshops, and exhibits targeted at the global HPC community. Between customer meetings, conference sessions, and catching up with industry peers, we gathered our favorite moments and reflections on the show below.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how to integrate cloud technologies with HPC were overarching themes for the event, and these topics were addressed in many sessions. Conference keynote speaker Dr. Maria Girone, CERN openlab CTO, was an absolute favorite of the week. Dr. Girone discussed the unique needs and future challenges of CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and data center. Because of the wide breadth of variables they measure – conditions in the LHC range from millions of times hotter than the sun to almost absolute zero – they collect 1 PB of data per second that has to be filtered and then reconstructed in real time during LHC experiments. Over the next decade, CERN estimates that it will increase compute capacity demand by 50 to 100 times as they prepare to build the next particle accelerator, the “High-Luminosity” Large Hadron Collider. Storage Technologies and the Future of Digital Data

Spectra Logic published its third annual Digital Data Storage Outlook today. The report casts an eye on the future regarding the storage, management and preservation of the world’s treasury of digital information, helping data users navigate budget and infrastructure challenges for years to come.

As a leader in providing a full range of data storage solutions, including disk, tape and hybrid cloud storage, Spectra constantly surveys customer needs across the global landscape to design and deliver technology that helps organizations collect, manage, access and protect their valuable data. Spectra was an early innovator in robotics, automation, and interfaces. From bringing Winchester disks and SCSI tape to minicomputers, to manufacturing the world’s largest tape library and private cloud object storage, the company takes a technology and media-agnostic view of storage. The Rise of Ransomware and its Impact on Digital Preservation

Our digital world is growing at an astounding pace. While society’s collective knowledge and understanding depends on the ongoing aggregation, analysis, and distribution of vast amounts of data, the preservation of these digital assets is at constant risk from cyber-attacks that evolve and threaten it. Recent reports total the number of new malware in 2016 alone at 127 million specimen, with other sources currently registering over 250,000 new malicious programs every day for 2018. While the growth in new types of the vast majority of malware is no longer expected to significantly increase year-over-year, most predict a sharp rise in ransomware. Read More

Is a Tape Environment Compatible with the GDPR?

General data protection regulation or GDPR and protecting your data imageWhat is GDPR?

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a newly implemented regulation concerned with the collection, handling, storage, protection and deletion of personal information of individuals within the European Union (EU). While reforms were agreed upon in December 2015, organizations were not expected to be compliant until May 25, 2018. The main points of the ruling are:

  • Organizations must protect data assets containing the personal information of EU residents.
  • Organizations must maintain the ability to delete such data and are required to do so upon the request of the individual

Organizations that do not manage and protect personal data appropriately face serious fines under the new regulation. This considerable penalty is why this regulation is getting so much attention, not only in Europe, but across the world. Read More

VeeamOn 2018 and the Hyper-Available Future

Tape Technology Remains a Viable Veeam Backup Target

I had the pleasure of attending my first VeeamOn event this week. Veeam’s annual conference provides both end users and partners with insightful information on new initiatives. Set in Chicago, this year’s event facilitates conversation on a broader level by bringing these audiences together in one location. From the moment I landed, I had a feeling that the event was going to blow me away. With 2,200 in attendance, it didn’t fail to impress.

Sessions outlined the importance of the hyper-availability of data. As Veeam describes it, the hyper-availability of data is the new standard for data in today’s enterprise – data that enables today’s “always-on” technologies to meet the business needs of our on-demand economy by bringing about new insights, increasing productivity, and optimizing delivery of new digital services. Ultimately, it is the inevitable future of business – a new intelligent data management paradigm. Read More

Spectra Logic Hosts Large Tape Users Group

Last week, Spectra Logic brought together close to 20 users from the large tape community for hands-on product demonstrations, in-depth technology discussions and classic mile-high networking. Many of these users have historically gathered for the annual Large Tape User’s Group Conference in Colorado.

The event enabled the attendees to hear how others are solving data storage challenges and obtain a first-hand look at the future of storage. This year’s topic, “Scaling the Performance Wall,” focused on the need for overall performance when implementing storage solutions for massive data environments. Read More

Sixth Annual WILD Summit Inspires Women at Spectra Logic

Breakthrough. This was the theme of the 2018 Women in Leadership Development (WILD) Summit that took place on Thursday, April 26, at the Colorado Westin Westminster. The event was designed to inspire through stories of real women, accomplishing real things, in our world. The conference was attended by over 900 mostly women business owners, professionals, entrepreneurs, and students.

Break through what, you might ask? Norms, ceilings, molds – anything and everything getting in the way of women moving ahead and into leadership positions in their life and work. Speakers and panelists opened up about their own personal and professional breakthroughs. The morning panel with Katica Roy, CEO and co-founder of Denver-based Pipeline Equity, was a highlight for Jenny Mahoney, business intelligence developer at Spectra Logic. “I was very happy to hear Katica comment on what I consider the ‘missing link’ in most efforts around gender equity: support of men in traditionally female roles,” says Mahoney. Pipeline leverages artificial intelligence to help businesses operationalize gender equity and drive economic gains. Katica shared data points and insights validating the positive correlation between gender equity and revenue performance and dispelling the myth that women leave work because of motherhood. Read More
