BlueScale providing power efficientcy to library management

To help data centers achieve more energy efficient and green operations, TFinity’s ultra-efficient design stores more data behind every power consuming component in the library. Alternative offerings to TFinity can utilize five times more power for an equivalent amount of stored data. Multiple servers and appliances are often required to host management and software functionalities for library configuration, virtualization, encryption key management and tape health monitoring. Bulk Media HandlingteraPack
Fast and efficient media import/export: The Bulk TeraPack Access Port (TAP) system, an optional feature, allows you to import or export tapes more efficiently than before—as much as seven times faster. With TFinity’s Bulk TAP system, you can import or export up to 14 TeraPack containers (or 140 LTO tapes or 126 TS11X0 tapes) in a matter of minutes.

  • Up to two Bulk TAP service frames: 14 TeraPacks (140 LTO / 126 TS11X0) tapes per frame
  • Bulk TAP service frame may be attached to either end or both ends and can substitute for standard TFinity service frame

MediaIQ— MediaIQ is a performance technology that enables the TFinity ExaScale to queue up to six moves at a time to select the most efficient order in which to perform these moves. MediaIQ also greatly enhances the library’s utilization of the robotics system picking the best robot for each move.

SlotIQ — SlotIQ* is a performance technology that enables the TFinity ExaScale to reduce the amount of robotic movement required for any set of moves. The technology operates in such a way that redundant and wasteful moves are completely eliminated and many moves are performed with little robotic movement.

LogIQ — LogIQ* is a new centralized report location that gathers and stores all logs and trouble reports, providing users with the ability to easily send all valuable reports to Spectra’s Support department. This will result in less downtime and a more rapid diagnosis of problems.

Spectra BlueScale® Encryption Options
Spectra Logic offers three types of encryption: Free Spectra BlueScale Standard Encryption, optional Spectra BlueScale Professional Encryption and optional Spectra SKLM Encryption. Depending on your infrastructure, security levels and the amounts and kinds of data you want to encrypt, one of Spectra’s encryption offerings will meet your critical data protection needs — from small organizations to the largest, most security-conscious enterprises.

Spectra BlueScale Standard Encryption
Spectra BlueScale Standard Encryption is free and offers integrated encryption key management provided through the library’s user interface. Included as a standard feature on all Spectra libraries, BlueScale Standard Encryption Key Management encrypts data on tape easily, efficiently and without cost. Secure and easy to use, BlueScale Standard Encryption provides powerful key management features for encryption and decryption. BlueScale Standard Encryption is suitable for sites with a primary goal of securing data while it is transported to a remote location and stored for long-term archival.

For an additional charge, Spectra BlueScale Professional Encryption provides additional choices for defining the level of security to implement in the data center. It is suitable for sites that want the added security of multi-password access to the encryption configuration controls and for importing and exporting encryption keys and the added flexibility of storing up to 30 encryption keys on the library.

Storage Virtualization Architecture
TFinity’s storage virtualization architecture makes it easy to optimize library performance and use. All WWNs and serial numbers for devices presented to the storage network are virtualized. With this, you can replace a hardware component without reconfiguring the network and archive/backup software environment to recognize the new device. In the case of a tape drive failure, the virtualization architecture combined with the Global Spare tape drive enables TFinity users to remotely fail-over from one tape drive to another without reconfiguring other components in the environment or even requiring personnel to go onsite to access the physical library.

Media Lifecycle Management (MLM) ensures the safety of your data by providing continuous assessments on more than 40 different metrics throughout the life of each tape. Drive Lifecycle Management (DLM) helps you monitor drives by integrating tape drive analysis, diagnostics and reporting within the library’s easy-to-manage, color-coded icons that help you quickly identify the health status of a drive.

Library Lifecycle Management (LLM) manages the health of your library’s critical components. By delivering utilization metrics relative to the expected useful life of library robotics, filters and other critical components; you are able to service your library before issues occur.


Data Integrity Verification

To give you data integrity verification, Spectra offers a sophisticated suite of standard features that allow you to actively check data already written to tape.

PreScan checks each imported tape and verifies that the tape can be written to, scanning the tape for potential issues including broken or dislodged leader and write-protected status.

QuickScan scans a tape uni-directionally by reading the length of one wrap of the tape to provide a rapid indicator of integrity of data written.

FullScan (only with LTO) confirms that there are no media errors on the tape by reading the entire length of the tape up to the end of the recorded data. To ensure that the data is valid, you can set triggers to check the health of tapes over an interval of time or verify a specific tape’s data integrity on request. This process allows for checks of data integrity.

Auto Drive Cleaning
The TFinity improves reliability by automating the tracking and cleaning of drives. Auto Drive Clean provides library-based cleaning of LTO drives without user intervention. Automated drive cleaning results in fewer failed tape read/write operations and is the recommended method for cleaning drives. The TFinity’s Auto Drive Clean feature uses a dedicated cleaning partition for storing cleaning cartridges. The cleaning partition can be shared by multiple storage partitions and is used by the library to automatically clean drives whenever necessary. The TFinity library will send an email to users if a drive hasn’t been cleaned recently. This will help to prolong the life of the drive, by ensuring all drives are being cleaned on a regular basis.
