Spectra Logic Joins the Green Grid

BOULDER, Colo. – March 12, 2008 – Spectra Logic, the data storage innovator, today announced its membership in The Green Grid. The Green Grid is a global consortium dedicated to advancing energy efficiency in data centers and business computing ecosystems. Spectra Logic’s membership will extend the company’s knowledge and resource bank on end user needs for energy efficiency in storage.   Spectra Logic designs its intelligent Secondary Storage disk appliances and tape libraries with the EnergyAudit™ power usage and monitoring feature included standard. EnergyAudit taps directly into the power supply to track how much power is in use real time, and can report the data in watts per cubic foot, square foot or terabyte.  Spectra Logic designs power efficiency savings into all secondary storage platforms. For example, the Spectra T950 annual energy costs for power and cooling are more than 50 percent less than other enterprise-class tape libraries.   End users continue to note in our research that the finite power allocation planned for future storage growth is often consumed months, if not years, ahead of expectations and that close to 25 percent of all new data centers are being created to address this growth in power usage,” said Robert Stevenson, managing director of storage research for TheInfoPro (www.theinfopro.net). “Spectra Logic’s EnergyAudit feature offers a step towards energy measurement, allowing for better management of power usage within existing data centers.”   The Green Grid seeks to provide industry-wide recommendations on best practices, metrics and technologies that will improve overall data center and business computing energy efficiencies. By joining The Green Grid, Spectra Logic is helping influence both developers and end users of data center technology.   “With energy costs rising, customers demand cost-effective and energy-efficient storage products,” said Nathan Thompson, Spectra Logic’s founder and CEO. “Spectra Logic designs solutions that use less power and offers tools to calculate cost-savings, and are now backing our commitment by joining the industry’s knowledge leader so we can continue to offer the most timely tools that customers wish to deploy.”

Spectra Logic Hosts Bonfils Blood Drive to Support Colorado Community

More than 10 percent of staff to donate in “mobile” blood drive at Boulder headquarters BOULDER, Colo. – March 11, 2008 – Bonfils Blood Center needs more than 4,000 people to donate blood each week to meet the needs of Colorado’s patients and to maintain a state of blood supply readiness to support any unforeseen events.  Spectra Logic is hosting an onsite employee blood drive today to support Bonfils, which provides Colorado with an incredible 80 percent of the state’s blood supply. Spectra Logic selected the mobile blood drive option, where Bonfils collects donations at the company’s chosen site. More than half of the blood Bonfils’ collects comes from its mobile blood program. Some organizations host one drive per year, others host drives every 56 days (the donation interval for whole blood) and some host a drive as often as 12 times per year. “We are in constant need for donations, as red blood cells are usable for only 42 days,” said Julie Scott, public relations specialist for Bonfils. “Four percent of Colorado residents currently donate blood, and we depend on organizations like Spectra Logic to maintain a healthy blood supply for local patients.”   2007 Facts about Bonfils Blood Center

  • Bonfils collected nearly 200,000 units of blood in 2007, which saved or enhanced 600,000 lives.

BigMachines Customer Spectra Logic Featured in Sales Effectiveness Report By Aberdeen Research

Chicago, IL and San Mateo, CA, January 22, 2008 — BigMachines, Inc., a leading provider of web-based configurator, quote, and proposal selling tools, today announced that Spectra Logic, a leader in data archive and backup solutions, recently discussed their successful BigMachines deployment in a report on “Sales Effectiveness – Leveraging Content to Close Deals” by Aberdeen Research (Gretchen Duhaime, December 2008).    BigMachines’ Lean Front-End® (LFE) solution helps leading companies in the high technology, industrial equipment, healthcare, and software/services markets empower their sales teams and channels.   At Spectra Logic, both internal employees and resellers login to the software online to generate quotes, and are confident that the product list and pricing is up-to-date. “In the past, if sales reps wanted to generate a quote for a new product, they had to involve product management and manufacturing to manually draft and approve the documents. BigMachines has eliminated the manual, off-line process- and we can add new products to our system quickly and easily,” notes Jeff Braunstein, Web Marketing Manager.   Aberdeen’s report identifies several differentiators in sales processes and technology utilized by Best-in-Class companies, which enable their sales organizations to spend more time selling. “Besides ensuring consistency, automating access to marketing content saves sales time,” explains Gretchen Duhaime, a research analyst at Aberdeen. “If sales does not have collateral readily available, they are burdened to create it themselves or work with marketing to draft it, which either takes sales representatives out of the field or adds to their support staff workload.” In line with this strategy, BigMachines LFE is an intuitive system with a unique web services architecture which empowers both direct sales teams and external sales channels to quickly produce accurate quotes and professional sales proposals, with full integration to leading CRM and ERP systems.     According to CEO Godard Abel, “We are delighted that Spectra Logic is seeing success with their deployment and capturing return on their investment in BigMachines. The success of our growing customer community and our recognition by the marketplace- proven by our rapid growth into new markets, growing technology and services partnerships, and continued product development- will help us deliver increasing value to our customers.“   About Spectra Logic Spectra Logic is the leading innovator in data archive and backup. Bridgeworks Helps Spectra Logic T50 Tape Library Gain iSCSI Capability

‘Potomac’ iSCSI-to-SCSI SAN bridging technology used   Boulder, Colorado and Christchurch, United Kingdom -11th October 2007: Tape and disk library vendor Spectra Logic, the leading innovator in data archive and backup, is adding an iSCSI interface to its successful T50 departmental tape library by using iSCSI-to-SCSI bridging technology from Bridgeworks.   This enables customers to use the T50 as a data protection facility for iSCSI storage area networks (SANs) or as an Ethernet-connected device using the TCP/IP-based iSCSI protocol. iSCSI is a simple way to implement remote backup to a Disaster Recovery site.   With the advent of iSCSI, and its use of TCP/IP as the transport mechanism, it is now possible for any organisation to gain all the benefits that a SAN can bring to data management by using their existing network technology. Because TCP/IP is widely used and understood, there is no need to employ additional personnel or staff training programs to manage the infrastructure.   Bridgeworks’ ‘Potomac’ iSCSI-to-SCSI technology is embedded in the T50, and employs the latest ASICs (Application-Specific Integrated Circuits) and manufacturing techniques in a highly efficient and cost-effective design, making iSCSI SAN connectivity a practical alternative for smaller systems users.   Spectra Logic chose the Bridgeworks’ technology because of its high performance, low power needs and small size.   “Spectra Logic is dedicated to helping customers protect their data better,” said Nathan C. Thompson, Chairman and CEO of Spectra Logic. “Today, iSCSI is a mature technology and has become part of the SAN landscape. We are pleased to bring the capabilities of our award-winning T50 tape library to iSCSI SAN users.”   “We are delighted to be working with a major library manufacturer such as Spectra Logic,” said David Trossell, CEO of Bridgeworks. “This announcement represents the endorsement by a major player for iSCSI connectivity. The market for iSCSI products is now rapidly growing after a somewhat long incubation period but iSCSI adoption is now fully backed by all the major storage system vendors.”   The Spectra Logic T50 tape library comes in either rackmount or desktop form, and more than 1,000 units have been purchased by customers. It can have two LTO-4 tape drives and can store up to 80 terabytes of data with a throughput of 1.73 TB/hour.   About the Spectra T50 tape library: -4U -A T50 with two LTO-4 drives and 50 tapes configuration= 80 TB capacity and 1.73 TB per hour throughput -Takes less than thirty minutes to install -Departmental sized library- can be rack-mounted or used on a table top -Offers LTO-4 with key management for free through the Spectra BlueScale management interface.
