In its continuing effort to provide customers with the best technology on the market, Spectra is now offering its LTO-9 tape technology pre-purchase program. This program enables customers to receive the latest generation of LTO tape drives as soon as they are available. Spectra provides pre-purchase customers with LTO-8 tape drives now, and upgrades its customers’ tape libraries with LTO-9 drives when they become available, with no additional purchase required.

LTO-9 is the latest generation of tape drive technology from the LTO consortium. Linear Tape-Open Technology (LTO) is a tape-based data storage solution designed in an “open” format that allows manufacturing by any vendor that wishes to license the technology. The “open” nature of LTO technology enables compatibility between different vendors’ offerings and multiple sources of product and media.

In Spectra’s opinion, based on publicly disclosed information, the newest generation of LTO increases the native (non-compressed) capacity of a single data cartridge from 12TB (LTO-8) to 18+TB*, and increases compressed capacity up to 45+TB*. The native throughput will also increase from 360 MB/s to over 400 MB/s*.

The LTO-9 pre-purchase program is an excellent way for Spectra customers to start their migration from older generations of LTO to the newest, high-capacity, high-throughput tape technology. LTO-9 is expected to ship in the fall of 2020.

Spectra Certified Media, Spectra’s unique spin on LTO, was designed to ensure the most reliable and automated tape storage available. No other supplier places as much emphasis on continual enhancements and features that simplify all aspects of the media management process. With rich features like CarbideClean, Media Lifecycle Management and Data Integrity Verification, tapes are initially cleaned to extend their lifespan and proactively monitored in any Spectra library.
