Updates to Spectra’s Storage Portfolio Deliver Capacity, Cost and Time Advantages for Storing and Managing Media Content

NAB2018 and BOULDER, Colo. – April 9, 2018 – Spectra Logic today announced several new enhancements to its popular BlackPearl® Converged Storage System, a purpose-built storage platform that delivers feature-rich software for a modernized approach to storage. BlackPearl integrates directly with asset management applications to simplify workflows, seamlessly managing large volumes of content to a variety of storage tier options, including disk, tape and public cloud. Spectra’s BlackPearl ecosystem continues to expand with more certified clients, including Arcitecta’s Mediaflux®; Komprise’s data management software; StrongBox’s StrongLink®; and VSN’s VSNExplorer®. Spectra continues its strong partnership with Avid by integrating Avid’s MediaCentral® platform.

Spectra’s BlackPearl 5.0 software enhancements include:

  • Intelligent Object Management
    • Self-Healing – Allows files to self-heal all copies across all media if a problem is detected
    • Tape Consolidation – Provides automatic consolidation of data on fragmented tapes, reclaiming deleted tape storage capacity
    • Media Migration – Allows data to be migrated from one storage type to another quickly and transparently, which ensures data integrity while reducing costs
  • S3 Object Versioning – Allows multiple versions of the same file to be uploaded and saved on BlackPearl, ensuring customers do not lose data
  • Data Staging – Allows pre-staging of data from tape to disk, reducing wait times to use assets while taking advantage of tape’s cost savings
  • Intelligent Chunk Aggregation – Reduces tape mounts and improves tape throughput performance by identifying and grouping files together when writing to or reading from tape

“Media companies that create and own a vast amount of content need modern storage infrastructures to support this expanding growth,” said Matt Starr, CTO of Spectra. “Spectra’s storage solutions are helping production organizations, broadcast networks, studios, sports teams, universities and other content curators find new ways to store, manage, monetize and preserve their valuable media assets for future business use.”

“We chose a Spectra Logic solution for our media and entertainment workflow because it is easy to use, expandable and meets our performance requirements,” said Rob Dunn, Technical Services Manager, Preferred Media. “Spectra’s exceptional products, including BlackPearl, enable us to meet our storage, archive and disaster recovery initiatives. Their solutions are offered at a compelling price point and include features that are not found with competing IP-based archive systems.”

New 12TB Disk Drive Boosts Capacity
In addition to the BlackPearl software feature enhancements, Spectra recently added 12 terabyte (TB) Enterprise disk drives to its disk product offerings including Spectra’s ArcticBlue® Disk Solution. Delivering online long-term disk storage for the price of tape, ArcticBlue, powered by BlackPearl, provides organizations with object-based disk storage that scales in capacity and performance with a very low total cost of ownership (TCO). The 12TB drive extends storage capacities to more than 10 petabytes (PB) in a single system.

Spectra Stack Tape Library for M&E Environments
For media and entertainment professionals, the ability to create, share, store, retrieve and preserve digital content is vital to their success. The recently announced Spectra® Stack Tape Library fits seamlessly into M&E environments, economically safeguarding content and providing access to those assets when needed, even years or decades later. Leveraging Spectra’s BlackPearl Converged Storage System, this unique solution from Spectra is one of the most scalable, secure and affordable storage systems available for M&E assets.
