BOULDER, Colo., September 18, 2006—Light Reading‘s Byte and Switch, the premier online storage networking publication, named Spectra Logic BlueScale™ Encryption the winner of the first annual Big Bytes Award in the Storage Network Security category. Spectra’s BlueScale Encryption was selected above other category finalists EMC Documentum Information Rights Management Services and NeoScale CryptoStor KeyVault.
The Big Bytes, created to recognize excellence, innovation, and creativity in storage products, services, and implementations, were in a ceremony last week at StoragePlus 2006 – Byte and Switch’s two-day enterprise storage conference.
“The Storage Network Security category honors devices and software specifically aimed at protecting data in storage networks,” said Terry Sweeney, editor in chief of Byte and Switch. “We congratulate Spectra Logic and the other Big Bytes winners on their selection.”
Spectra BlueScale Encryption is the only fully integrated AES-256 bit encryption offering available in tape and disk libraries today. Data encrypted by Spectra BlueScale encryption can be stored on LTO, SAIT, SDLT and RXT media. It integrates seamlessly with all major ISV applications, operating systems, and database applications. This seamless approach enables all key management to be performed from the library’s front panel or Web interfaces. No additional servers, appliances or applications are necessary to take advantage of BlueScale Encryption. Spectra T950 and T120 libraries began shipping with encryption enabled hardware in December 2005. A software key simply needs to be entered to enable the full suite of encryption functionalities on these libraries.
“Spectra Logic engineering built our flexible library platforms to seamlessly support the range of features most important to our customers’ backup and security requirements. We are honored by this industry recognition for a critical storage feature that helps security conscious companies meet their data protection goals in a fully secure, yet affordable and easy to implement solution,” said Matt Starr, chief technology officer of Spectra Logic. “Our libraries support the strongest available encryption algorithm with a full suite of key management options designed specifically for secure data encryption on tape and mobile disk.”
Spectra Logic designed BlueScale Encryption to solve the primary concerns of their customers with respect to implementing encryption. These customers asked for an affordable, well integrated encryption solution that included compression and did not cause server overhead. BlueScale Encryption addresses each of these customer needs. The standard edition of the key management software is available free of charge, with annual support fees as low as $2,500. The hardware based encryption and compression is performed within the library and is managed from the standard library interfaces. All encryption and compression overhead is offloaded from the server to the library.
