Users Protect Data in Transport Affordably, Effortlessly with Encryption-Enabled Libraries

GARTNER SYMPOSIUM/ITxpo, ORLANDO, FL., OCTOBER 17, 2005—Without encryption, data backups are vulnerable to unintended or malicious actions that put at risk confidential information and thousands or millions of identities, exposing organizations to serious legal liability. To address this risk, Spectra Logic today announces encryption-enabled libraries that integrate data backup with federally approved AES-256 encryption. By encrypting data through library hardware, data is secured, no additional point of management is required and proven backup strategies can continue unchanged. Spectra Logic is the only company to offer integrated library encryption.

“ESG research shows that only seven percent of businesses encrypt all stored data today, but as industry regulations become stricter, the number will increase rapidly,” said Jon Oltsik, senior analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group. “Spectra® libraries with BlueScale™ Encryption offer instant risk reduction and key management features to keep on-site and off-site data secure.”

Existing Spectra T120 and T950 library customers can upgrade their libraries with an encryption-enabled module, or blade, in seconds. New customers can purchase Spectra Logic encryption-enabled libraries to easily incorporate encryption into existing backup strategies. Spectra Logic’s flexible and powerful key management system lets users easily manage, restore and dispose of encrypted mobile media.

“It’s becoming increasingly evident that encrypting backups is a straightforward and secure way to address security issues relating to the loss of personal data and intellectual property,” says W. Curtis Preston, VP of Data Protection, GlassHouse Technologies.

“Our affordable and highly scalable solution—up to gigabytes per second in the Spectra T950— implements strong encryption for all generations of LTO, SAIT, SDLT and RXT SabreMedia disk,” said Nathan Thompson, Spectra Logic’s CEO. “In addition, our comprehensive key management system provides features that address the complexities inherent in managing mobile media.”

Spectra BlueScale Encryption works with all major platforms and operating systems, backup and database applications, and tape and mobile disk media. Basic encryption functionality will be available in the Spectra T950 and T120 libraries beginning in Q1 2006. Other encryption-enabled Spectra libraries will follow, along with solutions that provide FIPS 140 compliance. Pricing for encryption starts below $5,000. This innovative introduction adds to a solid list of industry innovations from Spectra Logic, including: first to automate AIT in a library; first with all-native Fibre Channel and iSCSI libraries; and first to integrate tape and disk in a single-frame library.
