Spectra S50 Manages 40 TB Capacity and Performs at 576 GB/Hour Throughput

BOULDER, Colo.,- August 29, 2005 – Spectra Logic, the data protection innovator, is announcing the availability of its newest tape library, the Spectra® S50. The S50 is a fast, affordable library suited for the entry-level market, including small businesses and organizations, and larger organizations with smaller remote offices and departments. The small and smart S50 provides room for growth with up to 40 TB capacity in only 7 inches (4U), and performance that scales up to 576 GB/hr.

“Spectra Logic S50 library addresses a broad range of backup and data protection requirements of the entry-level marketplace,” said Doug Chamberlain, Spectra Logic product manager. “The S50 is easy to use, manage and maintain, which lowers management costs for customers. Its feature set and affordability make it a perfect fit for SMB resellers, direct marketing resellers and distributors, making it broadly available for SMB users to purchase the library.”

The Spectra S50 expands to hold up to 50 LTO tape cartridges, so the library can keep up with SMB data growth, and can support multiple drives so that performance can also scale. This means that the library can grow along with customer data, which protects the customer’s investment in the S50 library. The seven-inch library is rack-mountable and can be configured with up to four LTO-2 half-height drives or two LTO-3 full-height drives.

The library, with LTO3 drives, can backup data to write-once read-many (WORM) tape cartridges, and is compatible with all major backup applications and operating systems. Customers can connect their servers directly to the S50 with either Fibre Channel or SCSI. The S50 is available immediately and pricing begins at $9,500. End users may purchase the S50 from CDW, PC Mall, PC Connection and SoftChoice, and resellers can purchase though D&H Distributing Co.
